"This "phantom" was based on an alternative history of Volkswagen(see link below); one in which Ferdinand Porsche was not jailed in France at the end of WWII, but rather was given control of the Wolfsburg plant by the British. The '67 Bug was to become a "Type I Sport Coupe", a "Proto-GTI", if you will...

You will notice that the body was not hacked, and it would be a simple matter of a few days work to return it to 100% stock appearance. I have all of the original parts that were not used in storage. The color is the original Lotus White. Many of the original parts were reused to maintain the vintage"flavor" of the car.

All modifications were made with either original VW parts (from various models and years) or repros similar in appearance. I know that some parts would not strictly fit my "phantom" scenarioo, but the car is still a daily driver and concessions had to be made to the real world and contemporary technology. The third brake light, for instance, would not have been found on a mid-60's car (although it was, of course, technologically possible), but for safety's sake, it made sense, especially considering my choice of tailights. By the way, forgive my use of 1939 Ford reproduction tailights. At under $30./pr., they were a viable option to Porsche 356 units at $250./each!. Besides, they are very close in appearance, and illusion is the name of the game here..."
