Hej

I am toying with the idea of buying a bay window vw campervan , either from the uk or from kieft en klok in holland.

I just have a couple of questions regarding insurance in dk - can anyone recommend a good insurer for older cars? and would i be ablt to get insurance for a dutch registered carwhilst driving it back to denmark?

I also understand an 'old timer' car is cheaper tax and insurance, but i am only able to drive it 9 months of the year - is this true? and if so, is it obligatory to have a 35 year or older car registered as this, or can i register it for daily use?

Your help with my questions is much appreciated

Hi Adam,
Speak to Kieft about insurance from Holland, they do it all the time and I'm sure they have a solution.
I have my '64 bus insured with topdanmark, it costs about 1200 kr a year as an oldtimer, and I didn't have to prove I was a member of a veteran car club, as some of the other insurers insist on. I'm not sure if I get it cheaper because it's not my main car, but could imagine that it plays a role.
the tax or afgift is 25% of normal as an oldtimer, so it's almost nothing.
If you buy in UK, don't tell them you're taking it abroad, you'll have a devil's job of insuring it. Give them an address in England, your parents or whatever, and just insure it normally as a veteran vehicle. Then ring them up and tell them you're going on holiday in Europe. When you get it to Denmark you can drive it for a few weeks without worrying while you sort out the import tax, plates and syn etc. Then when you've got it sorted, just ring and cancel the English insurance.
When you buy your van, don't be lulled into a false sense of security with an MoT, the Danish syn is much harsher.
In all honesty, if you could find one in Denmark, you'll save yourself a whole lot of trouble. It's not an easy system if you're not born into it! (Which I guess from your choice of language, you are not!)
Good luck, and let me know if I can help in any way.

Mange Tak for the info Duncan,

cleared up some of my questions, i realise if i'm going to import one it's going to have to be dead solid to pass the syn and believe me, if i could find a decent 'rugbrød' for sale in denmark i would buy it like a shot - if anyone knows of any for sale that would require little other than regular mantenance and with withstand the Danidh roads/weather for some time then let me know

Adam
